“Blessed be they who dwell in this house” reads a Greek inscription in an elegant mosaic floor of a Byzantine-period house. Almost every substantial Jerusalem house built in the Byzantine period had a mosaic floor in one or another of its rooms, thanks to the availability of a large work force of mosaic artisans.
