Water channel. Hewn from bedrock, this carefully graded, one-foot-wide conduit passes under the fortress’s western wall, its glacis and the revetment wall reinforcing the glacis.

The 80-foot-long channel received water drawn from the well (see photo) outside the fortress and carried it up the hill to the channel opening outside the wall. From there the water flowed into two underground, plastered cisterns (see plan) within the fortress. The reserve thus created could be reached safely in times of siege.
