When the step leading to the altar was uncovered, archaeologists found on it two small, shallow bowls that had been used to hold offerings. Near the rim of the bowl pictured here are inscribed two Hebrew characters, qof and kaf. This is probably an abbreviation for Qodes Kohanim, “sacred to the priests.”
