Jeremiah by Michelangelo, from the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Jeremiah decried Judah’s alliance with Egypt, predicting that it would bring destruction from the Babylonians. As Nebuchadnezzar thrashed the Egyptians at Carchemish (c. 605 B.C.), the Lord told Jeremiah to write his prophecies on a scroll, “and Baruch wrote in the scroll, at Jeremiah’s dictation, all the words which the Lord had spoken to him” (Jeremiah 36:4).
