ON THE COVER: A benevolent smile belies the three threatening horns on this clay figurine found at Horvat Qitmit, in the Negev. The horned headdress—dated to the seventh or sixth century B.C.—identifies the figure as a deity. Site of an Edomite shrine, Horvat Qitmit sheds “New Light on the Edomites,” the hated, but little understood, enemy of the Israelites we know from the Bible.
