Crossing the Isthmus of Corinth. The emperor Nero in 67 A.D. got as far as breaking ground for a canal; his building plans included using as slave labor 6,000 Jewish prisoners captured in the Jewish Revolt in Judea. But it was the French who executed the task; begun in 1881, the canal opened in 1893.
