The crypt, found beneath the southern chapel attached to the basilica (see reconstruction), features troughlike burial places along the left and right walls. This tomb undoubtedly held the most prominent monks—probably including the abbot—and leading members of the church. However, the discovery of the skeletons of a woman and a child among the bones perplexed the excavators.
