Memorial to the “swine miracle.” The lower part of the structure consists of the remains of a chamber, once surmounted by a tower, that enclosed a massive boulder, as if to protect it. Over 22 feet high, this boulder probably marked the site where Jesus reportedly cured the demoniac (Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39; Matthew 8:28–34). The restored basilica stands on the plain below, in the background of this photo.

On a terrace above the boulder, the remnants of a small chapel (see plan and section), with mosaic paving and an apse, complete the memorial.
