Once sheathed in gold, according to the pharaoh who erected them, these pillars and perhaps as many as 22 others in the Shrine of the Sacred Boat, at Karnak, Egypt, were carved to resemble bundles of papyrus reed. Narrow horizontal slits on the base and vertical slits around each column held the edges of gold sheets (see close-up).
