Coincidental similarity? Professor Nahman Avigad observed that Building C resembles part of the ninth-century B.C. “ostraca house” at Samaria (so called because of the many inscribed sherds, or ostraca, found there), whose partial plan appears here. In this portion of the “ostraca house,” the rooms’ shapes and positions, flanking a central passage, are similar to the chambers in Building C. Avigad suggests that Building C may not be a gatehouse after all, but rather, as at Samaria, an independent building.
