Tel Beer-Sheba’s gatehouse (stratum II) consisted of two chambers on each side of the passageway. The back wall of the right-hand chambers—although only part of the wall’s foundation was actually found—is shown as extending into the city beyond the gatehouse. The similar extension of the wall to the northwest of Building C may represent an analogous structure, or it may indicate the former existence of a third chamber in the Ophel gatehouse.
