Vanished vanity’s scant remains. A girl’s plait of hair, discovered along with a wooden comb (see photograph) that may once have groomed it, infuse humanity into archaeologists’ dusty, impersonal pursuits. Discovered in the cave floor’s detritus, the girl’s braid dates to the same time period as the comb and may well have come from a Jewish refugee who hid to escape the Romans.
