At Ashkelon, Donna Canalizo removes dirt from around posts that supported the floor in the hypocaust or steam room of a Roman bath-house. Hot air circulated from a nearby furnace into the space below the floor. Steam was produced when water was poured onto the upper surface of the heated floor.
