Glass tubes and rods found in Avigad’s Jewish Quarter excavations testify to an early stage in the Hellenistic invention of glass blowing. Dating from about the middle of the first century B.C.E., this technique for working glass employs a hollow tube to blow hot, viscous glass into a bubble that can then be easily shaped.
