Garo Nalbandian
Undisturbed for 1,200 years, the neatly arrayed basilica columns at Sussita/Hippos seem to wait for someone to place them again on their pedestals. At center are the row of columns and the nave of the cathedral. The Cardo, or main street, ran to the right of the cathedral. The powerful tremors of the 747 A.D. earthquake toppled the graceful structures in Hippos and brought to an end the city’s thousand-year history.
