Teatime in the field. David Alon, right, of the Israel Antiquities Authority, shares a cup of tea with Salem Et-Touri, a Bedouin guard at a site in the northern Negev foothills. Co-director of the Shiqmim excavation, Alon has discovered hundreds of ancient settlement sites in the Negev. Et-Touri, after learning the basics of pottery chronology, discovered a major Chalcolithic village at Abu Hof, near Tell Halif, where Alon and the author have also excavated.
