Mimicking the shape of this vessel, an elegant, long-necked bird graces a pitcher with a spout and handle. Birds were the favorite animal decorative motif on pottery of Akrotiri, as they were on Cycladic pottery in general. Another popular subject, in keeping with the island’s marine activities, was dolphins.
