The excavators believe the Ashkelon calf was displayed emerging from its shrine, much like the calf or bull depicted in this drawing. The image, engraved on a second-millennium B.C. cylinder seal from Acemhöyük, in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), shows the animal poking its head from its shrine and a suppliant with raised hands.
