Phoenician cultural influence. Though only about three-quarters of an inch high, the fifth-century B.C. stamp seal of a hero fighting a lion (found at Ashkelon’s warehouse) displays the influences of two cultures. The pose is a common one in Persian art, but the hero’s short skirt is Phoenician. Items such as this testify to the dominance of Phoenician culture in Ashkelon.
