Ashkelon in stone. This mosaic, with the name ASKALO[N] in capital letters, is a detail of the sixth-century A.D. Madaba map from a church in Madaba, Jordan, showing what may have been Ashkelon’s Eastern, or Jerusalem, Gate at upper right. Buildings are depicted near the city wall at upper left; the colonnaded decumanus, or main east-west street, leads down from the gate to a plaza and to what may have been a Roman-period triumphal arch.
