From Michael Zohart, Flora Palaestina

Ashkelon, Ascalon, scallion. An important agricultural center in Roman times, Ashkelon (Ascalon in classical sources) gave its name to a locally grown member of the onion family— what we today call the scallion. The drawing shows the flowers, bulb and leaves of a scallion, as well as a closeup of one flower element (at left).
