The bushy, Mediterranean maquis that covered the hills where the Israelites settled in the final stage of their sedentarization process offered less suitable terrain for grazing; such land can quickly become denuded, as in the foreground of this maquis-covered slope on Mt. Carmel. Consequently, the Israelites probably grazed their flocks in some valley forests while cultivating mountain plots.
