Map in hand and spade at the ready, Charles Warren prepares to explore a rock-cut conduit under what we now call Robinson’s Arch, at the southwestern corner of the Herodian Temple Mount. Warren’s often heroic research has provided us with most of our knowledge about what is under the Temple Mount. This drawing, from 1870–1871, is by William “Crimea” Simpson, dispatched by the Illustrated London News to record Warren’s exploits.
