Ceremonial standards comprised of elaborate finials mounted on poles were widely used in the ancient Near East. This finial, which may come from Alaca Hoyuk in Anatolia, was found in a third-millennium B.C.E. burial site. Surrounding the rim of the bronze openwork disc are stags with long antlers. The disc may represent the sun or symbolize the cosmos.
