Stone tomb door. Carved to resemble the wooden door of a house, the door of this first-century A.D. Jewish tomb on the northwest side of Sepphoris still swings on its hinges, closing to the right in this photo taken from inside the tomb. The purpose of its design was to make the tomb resemble home, to imply that death was the final dwelling and not to be feared.
