Snakes and giraffes decorate this ceramic jar displayed in the “Ancient Nubia” exhibition. Dated between 100 B.C. and 300 A.D., the 13-inch-high jar was found at Karanog, a Lower Nubian provincial capital in the Meroitic empire. Although giraffes no longer lived in the Karanog region when this jar was made, they were known from areas farther to the south.
