“Here lies Maria, wife of Salutius, who lived a good life with her husband. In peace be her sleep.” Maria’s tombstone bears several typical Jewish symbols often found on Jewish grave markers. The menorah, the seven branched candlestick, is flanked on right and left respectively by the lulav (a palm branch) and the etrog (a citron)—both used in the synagogue during the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles (Succot) At far left is a depiction of a shofar, a ram’s horn trumpet, blown during the celebration of the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) and at the conclusion of the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
