Canaanite Dor. Archaeologists have uncovered little so far of the earliest levels at Dor because of the great depth at which they lie. The Canaanites, the progenitors of the Phoenicians, founded Dor as early as 1900 B.C.E. (Middle Bronze Age IIA). One artifact that has come to light from this early period is an Egyptian seal, dated to the 17th to 16th centuries B.C.E. When pressed into wet day, the stone seal leaves a mirror image in relief as seen in the modern example below the seal. On the seal, two scarabs flank an Ureus (sacred cobra), magical symbols of health and power.
