A fierce conflagration consumed the Sikil city, leaving behind shattered limestone, oxidized mudbricks and abundant ash. In this aerial photo, sandbags outline excavation area G, the center of the Sikil city, where archaeologists in 1992 found evidence of the fire. The exposed structures are all regular residential buildings.
