Elegant column bases at Qumran suggest a style of architecture that some scholars find hard to believe for a simple, quasi-monastic community. Other objects from Qumran—glass unguentaria, elegant urns and fine pottery—also indicate a somewhat luxurious lifestyle. But luxurious artifacts do not preclude religiosity, as many examples from monasteries show, argue the upholders of the traditional interpretation.
