Ras Feshka, a promontory less than a mile south of Qumran, drops precipitously to the edge of the Dead Sea, creating a natural barrier to travel along the shore. In antiquity, Qumran therefore lay at a dead end. The hypothetical military fortress at Qumran would have had no strategic route to guard.
