Kathleen Kenyon, the grand dame of British archaeology at the end of the empire in Palestine. Renowned for introducing exacting field techniques to Near Eastern excavation, Kenyon dug at Jericho and in Jerusalem. She was never able to adjust to the contributions of subsequent Israeli archaeology and failed to incorporate into her work the findings of Israeli excavators.
