Roland de Vaux. A Dominican father and the director of the École Biblique in Jerusalem, de Vaux was a major figure on the Biblical archaeology scene. Trude Dothan remembers him as a perfect gentleman. De Vaux headed the team that explored the site of Qumran and nearby caves along the Dead Sea, the location of the Dead Sea Scroll finds. He never completed the final excavation report on Qumran, however, and others are now preparing it for publication.
