Freshwater springs, like the one that tumbles down the cliff into a pool at Ein Gedi, enabled Iron Age agricultural settlements to exist on the western coast of the Dead Sea. Without these springs, the low annual precipitation (two inches or less) and the Dead Sea’s agriculturally useless salt water could not have sustained settlements.
