Capernaum’s sea wall. The pristine white walls of the Greek Orthodox church in the background of this photo contrast with the indigenous black basalt rock placed along the edge of the sea. The wall and other port installations probably date to the late Roman period (second-third centuries A.D.). Capernaum’s fishing industry was an important contributor to the town’s prosperity during this period.
