Excavators uncovered a staircase in the domestic structure containing Murex shells (see photograph and plan), an indication that it had a second story. The roofs of Capernaum’s buildings, unlike those of other contemporaneous cities, were not made with basalt slabs; instead they probably consisted of wood covered with grass or straw and earth.
