Murex shells, such as the ones shown at right, were a valuable commodity in the ancient world because of the prized royal purple dye that they contained. These shells, and dozens of bone needles used to puncture them, were found in a Byzantine-period domestic structure at Capernaum (the topmost building at left in the plan).
