The Silwan tombs today. This view shows four tombs—from tomb 7 (the large square opening to the left of center) to tomb 12. Tombs 8, 9 and 10 appear at lower right, with tombs 11 and 12 incorporated into the house above them. Like the great majority of the tombs in the Silwan necropolis, tombs 7 through 12 are carved into the limestone cliffside and have rectangular or square openings. The entrances were originally blocked by square stone blocks, but they were removed long ago.
