A fissure in the wall of Warren’s Shaft, visible at the bottom of the shaft and diagonally across the floor, gave rise to the sinkhole by providing the initial route for the eroding water, a feature typical of sinkholes. The black color of the walls is due to soot from a fire shortly before the photo was taken.
