The simple grid of the Qumran settlement has perplexed scholars trying to determine who lived here. Rooms 2 and 4 on the plan would have provided ample dining space for large crowds, and the sophisticated water system (in blue on the plan) snaking through the Qumran settlement ensured the availability of water even after several dry seasons.
