William Foxwell Albright dominated Biblical archaeology between the two World Wars. Albright and the American school of archaeologists hoped to establish the general historical accuracy of the Bible, which had been undermined by German “higher criticism.”

Albright and his group of primarily Protestant scholars and clerics tried to use archaeological evidence to date the patriarchal narratives, but a later generation judged the effort a failure.
