Originally, this winged sphinx was entirely covered in gold leaf; it comes from Nimrud in modern Iraq and dates to the eighth or seventh century B.C.E. Unlike Phoenician and Egyptian carvings of composite creatures (such as our cherub), which are typically shown in profile, this sphinx is depicted frontally in the Assyrian manner.
