This drawing reveals the layers of structures in the area of Wilson’s Arch. The uppermost level is at present-day ground level, facing north. At far right is the western wall, with Wilson’s Arch straight ahead. One figure, top right, leans over one of Charles Warren’s shafts, which, though not shown in the drawing, extends down to the bedrock, the lowest level. Moving to the left at ground level, we pass Crusader construction and come to the “Secret Passage.” On the intermediate level, we see the original Herodian street running alongside the western wall; to its left are a modern flight of stairs and the “Masonic Hall.”
