Hazor Excavations

Huddle up! A team of Hazor excavators gathers around a hefty fragment from the largest Late Bronze (1550–1200 B.C.) deity statue ever discovered in Israel. While conservator Orna Cohen (right) and Hebrew University student Hila Devori (left) consider their next step in uncovering the statue, Neta Ish-Shalom, also of Hebrew University, inspects her broken thumb. On the last day of the season, excavators discovered the statue in the courtyard of a Canaanite palace destroyed by a fire. The heat from the blaze shattered the statue, which dig director Amnon Ben-Tor plans to reconstruct.
