The Hebrew word “shekel” spans the top of this early eighth-century B.C.E. bronze weight, used to weigh silver. This is the earliest known appearance of the Hebrew word, rather than the usual Egyptian hieratic sign for a shekel, on a dome-shaped weight. It weighs .57 ounces, significantly more than the .4 ounces of the average shekel weight.
