Recent Temple Mount excavations—conducted adjacent to the western wall and 25 feet below ground level—have uncovered a Herodian street, with large, well-dressed paving slabs running parallel to the wall. When the street is restored, tourists will be able to stroll along a 300-foot segment of the street, which may originally have been lined with the numerous markets and storehouses Josephus describes in this area. The entrance to one of the shops is visible at left.
