Jerusalem’s newest gate. Archaeologist Ronny Reich strides through the second gate to be discovered in Jerusalem in recent years. Reich and his team uncovered this gate while excavating the 12th–13th century A.D. wall upon which Jerusalem’s Old City wall now rests. The gate opens into the interior of what some believe to be the Crusader-era Tanner’s Tower. (The other gate to be discovered in Jerusalem lies below the Damascus Gate and dates to about 132 A.D., when the Roman emperor Hadrian rebuilt Jerusalem as a pagan city.)
