Paydirt! The charcoal-like remains of the sixth-century A.D. papyrus documents are black gold to the excavators at Petra’s Byzantine church. A fire that nearly destroyed the documents served, ironically, to preserve them: Instead of consuming the small and tightly rolled papyri, the fire carbonized them.
