Main street. Excavations 50 feet inside the Gate of the Essenes revealed a road that ran from the gate along the Essene Quarter. Archaeologist Shlomo Margalit stands with his back to the road, which runs across the photo from left to right.

A sewage channel running along the street (also from left to right behind Margalit) collected waste water from the city and emptied it into the Hinnom Valley.
