The Essene quarter. About 50 Essene kohanim (priests) may have lived in the southwestern corner of Jerusalem between 30 B.C.E. and 70 C.E. Mostly celibate, the kohanim adhered to purity laws far stricter than those followed by Jerusalem Temple priests.
